Sunday Sketch with Studio Calico

I love layering elements and building up a design, and sketches are perfect when you're feeling creative and want to play with some paper, but don't know where to start, so this sketch was perfect for doing all that. The sketch has a great balance of positive and negative space, and is designed to draw your eye to the sentiment.

In the original sketch, the card's base was embossed gold dots. For this card, I wanted an equally easy background that wasn't too busy, so I stamped the asterisk from the Birthday stamp set, and embossed a gold dot from the Penny Arcade stamp set in the middle of the asterisk.
The original card that this sketch is based on used a die to cut the felt into three squares, but in this card I wanted to do something different. So, I took two separate label dies, and used them to die cut patterned paper from Penny Arcade and Pinball kits, layering them to the card base.
I die cut Birthday from the Penny Arcade paper pad with the coordinating die from the Birthday stamp set, adhering them to a  banner strip that I trimmed from vellum. I layered this sentiment over some stars punched from the Pinball kit's paper collection. The sentiment says Birthday Wishes and I used alpha stickers from Pinball to spell it out. I added a little bit of thread for some soft texture.

I enjoyed designing with the sketch from my original card and hope you find it a fun sketch to work with. I'd love to see how you interpret the design in your own card making.
